With Lee Richardson’s departure coming as little surprise, the search is now on to find the next Chesterfield manager who will take the reins?and hopefully take the Spireites to promotion.

After two disappointing seasons, in the sense that Rico didn’t accomplish his goals, Richardson will now have to look elsewhere for employment in the football world.

Former Sheffield Wednesday chairman Dave Allen has recently invested £4 million into the newly developed ground that is set to be finished in 2010. With this type of financial backup the position of manager at the League Two club sets to be a healthy appetiser.

Chairman Barrie Hubbard has insisted that backroom staff Jamie Hewitt, Dave Thompson and former player turned trainer Shane Nicholson will all remain at Saltergate regardless of who the future manager may be.

Over 50 applicants have applied for the vacant post, with Hubbard and various shareholders reportedly narrowing down the list as we speak ready for the interview stages, which commence next week.

Two big names have attracted attention in the small town of Derbyshire as former Oldham boss John Sheridan and ex Huddersfield Town manager Andy Ritchie apparently lead the running for the job.

Sheridan, who only recently departed with the Latics in March after three seasons in charge of the League One side. Having passed Allen`s path before during his time at Hillsborough, Sheridan is favourite to make the job his.

Although Ritchie`s CV is as impressive, if not better, than Sheridan`s, with the former Manchester United player having already worked with Chesterfield`s Rob Page.

Page was one of Rico`s major signing expected to sort out any weakness at the heart of the Spireites defence, instead the former Wales international hasn`t been able to break back into the team since Christmas.

With the possibility of Ritchie coming to Saltergate, surely this could turn round Page`s career and show the Spireite fans that the central defender has still got what it takes to cut it in League Two.

Former Saltergate legends David Reeves and Steve Blatherwick are also in the frame after declaring they would be interested in managing their old side.
