Mark Smith has been named as Chesterfield’s caretaker manager following the weekend’s departure of manager Dean Saunders.

With another loss, this time four nil to Swindon, Saunders was relieved of his duties and our Academy Manager will now take charge of first team affairs until a new appointment is made.

Assisting Smith will be goalkeeping coach Mark Crossley and Paul Mitchell, our director of player recruitment.

Smith has previously had spells as Sam Allardyce’s assistant during their time together at Notts County and has held senior Academy roles at Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United and Barnsley.

He joined Chesterfield as youth team coach back in May 2013 and during his playing career he made over 500 appearances in spells at Sheffield Wednesday, Barnsley and Plymouth Argyle.

There is no word yet on a new permanent gaffer.
