The player of the season Nathan Smith missed the last eight games of the 2012-13 season because of the injury. Speaking to the club website he said: ‘Rehab’s going well, the cast’s off as you can see. I start running next week so they said just gradually take it slowly and I’ll be fine for pre-season.

‘I was doing everything to try and prevent any injuries, which was working, but one thing I couldn’t prevent was a fracture.’

He struggled to find his form in his first season in 2011/12 although he did put in a match winning tackle at Wembley in the JPT final helping the Spireites lift the trophy.

This season he has performed very well in every game, putting in some great tackles and helping the Spireites keep the second best defensive record in League 2. The Left-back will be vital to the Spireites promotion campaign and he goes on to say: ‘I don’t want to go to Wembley, I’d rather go straight up.’

Northampton suffered the heartbreak at Wembley in this season Play-offs losing to Bradford City in the final. The Spireites have previously seen both sides of it, their first appearance they suffered heartbreak losing to Cambridge United in the 1989/90 final but then they also tasted victory by beating Bury in the final in 1994-95 season.
