Manager Dean Saunders has was concerned about the defensive frailties of the team following the weekend’s game with Port Vale.

Speaking to the Official Site following the three two defeat, Saunders moaned that we can’t keep conceding the goals we are if we want to win matches moving forward.

‘I was a bit surprised when we turned up with how much snow was on the pitch, but it’s the same for both teams. We started the game off great, we could have scored in the first few minutes. Then they got a goal kick, we let the ball bounce and, there may have been a foul but the ball’s come back into our box and it’s been shot through some legs and we’ve gone 1-0 down against the run of play. We scored a great goal then, but they’ve had about four shots all afternoon and scored three of them. We got so many players to the byline today and just wasted too many chances.’

With positives from our forward play and the goals we scored, Saunders knows the problem is at the other end so it’s difficult to pleased with the performance offensively, because everyone has to be more disciplined when we don’t have the ball.

‘We scored two. But you can’t keep letting in the goals that we are. You go over these things in training, as we have done. If the players keep making the same mistakes they’ll get left out the team, until we get the tight defence that we want.’

On loan defender Richard Wood was also briefly interviewed after the game, and here’s what he had to say.

‘You can’t expect to win games by scoring four goals away from home, we’ve conceded three poor goals from our point of view and that needs eradicating quickly. If we’re going to do anything in this league we need to stop soft goals like that when we’re playing well in games. We dominated most of the game today.’

With a strong start, Wood went on to say it was a strange game with how it played out for us.

‘It was strange. We started off the game really well and put them on the backfoot straight away, which we wanted to do. With them having played on Thursday night we knew we had to start bright with a good tempo, but then the first time they came into our half they scored and it’s just disappointing when that happens. We need to iron things out quickly, it needs to stop.’

As for last night’s match, a three nil loss to Doncaster Rovers, Saunders talked of his disappointment at the game once more.

In his post game press conference, the Official Site have him saying that the whole club needs to regroup so we can forge on with better performances and results in the future.

‘They were just more clinical in front of goal. We missed too many chances and with too many opportunities we’re not putting the ball in the net. We gave the penalty away, and after that we were chasing the game. We’ve let eight goals in in the last three games, so I’ve got to do something about it. We’re not throwing caution to the wind, we’re quite solid but we seem to be getting punished for everything. Their third goal makes the scoreline look really bad but it was more even than that.’

With a few days until the visit of Swindon Town, Saunders know there’s an awful lot to work on but not a lot of time to do it in.

‘We’ve got to pick ourselves up now. We’ve got some good players and we’ve had three defeats, now we need to win three on the trot. You can’t let your disappointments sink into three or four games, so the players have got to dig in and we’ve got to give them some belief. We’ve got to regroup as a club and get ready for Saturday, making sure that we go out there and give a good performance.’
