Chesterfield caretaker boss Lee Richardson knows time is running out for his side after they crashed to a 1-0 home defeat against Gillingham.Andrew Crofts’ stoppage-time winner stunned the hosts and edged them closer to the League One precipice in heart-breaking fashion.

Richardson said: ‘It’s annoying because this has happened to us too many times this season. We are in this position because of games like this. We have to learn from that and deal with it. Sometimes when it looks like you are not going to get a win you take what you can get.’

‘There’s no excuse for losing a goal late on when you are desperate for points and we are disappointed and angry about that. There will be people who will say that’s it, it’s the end, there’s no way back but I don’t believe that for one minute.’

‘It’s going to be a case of battling on although results have gone against us. We always thought that we needed two wins from the last four games and we can still get those two wins.’
