Having confirmed that his top signing priority ahead of the deadline was a player who can operate both up front and out wide, Chesterfield manager John Sheridan is looking to do a deal for former Sheffield United man Jonathan Forte.

Now aged 25, the tall Forte is with Southampton having moved there from Scunthorpe United in January but with the Saints’ forwards in good goalscoring form he has found opportunities hard to come by this season.

A loan switch back into League One looks the most likely.

Sheridan, who again expressed his frustration at his side’s conceding of soft goals on Saturday, may also look to wheel and deal elsewhere ahead of Wednesday’s deadline. His fringe players will get a chance to impress their boss when Chesterfield reserves take on Derby County at the b2net Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

***Updated***Aaron Downes skippered the reserve side in a 3-2 defeat which also saw runouts given to Jamie Lowry, Mark Randall and Dean Morgan.
