Having made the last of his 300+ Chesterfield FC appearances in the 2-2 draw against Stevenage in March, Derek Niven is poised to join Blue Square Premier side Grimsby Town shortly.

The 28-year-old Scot has been training with the Mariners in pre-season and looks to have done enough to earn a move to Blundell Park.

Another experienced midfielder freed by the Spireites at the end of last season, Jamie Lowry, is also on the move.

Despite being linked with a permanent move to Crewe Alexandra after his loan spell at Gresty Road Lowry has opted to join Plymouth Argyle.

‘He can play anywhere in the midfield and right-back as well,’ Argyle manager Carl Fletcher told BBC Radio Devon.

‘It’s great for us to have that option and he’ll fit in great here. He’s originally from Newquay and knows the area and is a good player.’
