Skipper Ian Evatt has said that despite two good away performances last week, the fact Chesterfield have conceded six goals in those games proves without question that we have to improve defensively to give ourselves the best chance of picking up maximum points.

Speaking to the Official Site Evatt explained that he had no idea why we had become so leaky so quickly, but it’s obviously something that we need to address as our attacking performances haven’t resulted in the points we would’ve wanted lately because we just haven’t kept them out at the other end.

‘I wish I had the answer really – for whatever reason we’re conceding sloppy goals. We’ve not getting carved open from open play and we’re not conceding chance after chance, it’s just momentary lapses in concentration at set pieces or from balls in the box and it’s something we need to look at.’

Of course Evatt admits that defensive injuries haven’t helped, but he doesn’t feel we should be using those as an excuse, we should be striving for improvement instead.

‘It’s not been easy with the amount of injuries we’ve had, it’s not been easy with the changes, but there are no excuses from our point. We’ve worked hard on it this week and hopefully we’ll be able to keep it tight come Saturday.’

As Evatt explains, with Daniel Jones out, Georg Margreitter came in and then found himself injured, so then Charlie Raglan and Ritchie Humphrey have come in, and it just interrupts that consistency that a settled back four can build – but each of the players know they are better than that so it’s time for them to prove it.
